A local art mover and shaker noticed that my brother Symon had hung a Giclee print of koi from years ago on his balcony wall in the heart of Elmwood Village. The reviewer was very taken with the idea of displaying personal art for the public. I wrote him a note saying that my brother and I were following in our father’s footsteps. He updated the article, and voila! Text and pictures below.</div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://www.buffalorising.com/2020/07/buffalo-easter-eggs-ii/">https://www.buffalorising.com/2020/07/buffalo-easter-eggs-ii/</a></div><div><br /></div><div><figure class="entry-featured-media entry-featured-media-boxed" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: #1b1b1b; border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; caret-color: rgb(69, 69, 69); color: #454545; font-family: "Libre Baskerville"; font-size: 14px; margin: -16px auto 3.714285714286rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; position: relative; vertical-align: baseline; z-index: 0;"><a class="g1-frame g1-frame-center " href="https://www.buffalorising.com/2020/07/buffalo-easter-eggs-ii/" id="g1-frame-1" style="border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; color: #f03a63; cursor: pointer; display: block; max-width: 100%; position: relative; text-decoration: none;"><span class="g1-decorator" style="background-color: transparent; border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; display: block; height: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; overflow: hidden; padding: 0px 0px 548px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 730px;"><img alt="" class="attachment-g1_2of3_fluid size-g1_2of3_fluid wp-post-image" height="548" itemprop="image" sizes="(max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" src="https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3381-730x548.jpeg" srcset="https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3381-730x548.jpeg 730w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3381-300x225.jpeg 300w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3381-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3381-768x576.jpeg 768w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3381-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3381-2048x1536.jpeg 2048w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3381-1110x833.jpeg 1110w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3381-539x404.jpeg 539w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3381-350x263.jpeg 350w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3381-254x191.jpeg 254w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3381-125x94.jpeg 125w" style="background-color: transparent; border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; display: block; font-size: 12px; height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: right; vertical-align: baseline; width: 730px;" width="730" /></span></a></figure><div class="g1-block-indented" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; caret-color: rgb(69, 69, 69); color: #454545; font-family: "Libre Baskerville"; font-size: 14px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px 20px; vertical-align: baseline;"></div><div class="entry-content g1-block-indented g1-text-l" itemprop="articleBody" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; caret-color: rgb(69, 69, 69); color: #454545; font-family: "Libre Baskerville"; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.875; margin: 1.571428571429rem 0px 2.142857142857rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px 20px; vertical-align: baseline;"><p style="border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 2.142857142857rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">A few days ago I posted on a special <a href="https://www.buffalorising.com/2020/07/buffalo-easter-eggs/" style="border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; color: #f03a63; cursor: pointer; text-decoration: none;">Buffalo Easter Egg</a> that I came across during a walk in the Elmwood Village. Today I’m posting another Easter Egg in the form of a work of art adhered to the facade of a house. What I especially find interesting about this is that due to COVID-19, there is a dearth of art opportunities at hand. With shuttered galleries and studios, art does not abound as it once did. Therefore, public art has become more important than ever, even a little splash of art such as we see here.</p><p style="border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 2.142857142857rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">It’s not often that we see a work of art as part of a neighborhood streetscape. Maybe an occasional work on a boarded up window, or atop an easel on a front porch. But to see a painting actually hanging on clapboard? I think it’s pretty neat.</p><p style="border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 2.142857142857rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">What I love most about coming across this painting (there’s actually another work in the window), is that I was not expecting to see it. The creation drew my eyes to the house, where I also noticed the leaded glass windows, and other architectural details that might have escaped me.</p><p style="border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 2.142857142857rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">There’s a very humanist element that is to be appreciated. It tells us a lot about the person who lives inside – an art appreciator and an artist him or herself. This is a neighborly action that is not only meant to be shared with people perched on the patio, but passersby as well.</p><p style="border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 2.142857142857rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><a href="https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3382-scaled.jpeg" style="border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; color: #f03a63; cursor: pointer; text-decoration: none;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-139476" height="1920" sizes="(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" src="https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3382-scaled.jpeg" srcset="https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3382-scaled.jpeg 2560w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3382-300x225.jpeg 300w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3382-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3382-768x576.jpeg 768w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3382-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3382-2048x1536.jpeg 2048w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3382-1110x833.jpeg 1110w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3382-730x548.jpeg 730w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3382-539x404.jpeg 539w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3382-350x263.jpeg 350w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3382-254x191.jpeg 254w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_3382-125x94.jpeg 125w" style="border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; display: block; height: auto; margin: 0px auto; max-width: 100%; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" width="2560" /></a></p><p style="border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 2.142857142857rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">After posting this, the artist Barbara Mink reached out to me to share the following:</p><p style="border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 2.142857142857rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><a href="https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_0188.jpg" style="border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; color: #f03a63; cursor: pointer; text-decoration: none;"><img alt="" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-139493" height="238" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" src="https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_0188-300x238.jpg" srcset="https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_0188-300x238.jpg 300w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_0188-1024x811.jpg 1024w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_0188-768x608.jpg 768w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_0188-1110x879.jpg 1110w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_0188-730x578.jpg 730w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_0188-539x427.jpg 539w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_0188-350x277.jpg 350w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_0188-254x201.jpg 254w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_0188-125x99.jpg 125w, https://www.buffalorising.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_0188.jpg 1288w" style="border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; display: block; float: right; height: auto; margin: 0px 0px 0.75em 30px; max-width: 50%; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" width="300" /></a>I’m a member of the BSA but live and work in Ithaca NY. The “Flying Fish” is a giclée print of the original I had given my brother Symon almost ten years ago, when he and his wife Ellen lived in Buffalo. Whatever we can do as a community to lighten that burden even a little is so important. But just as important is having people notice and share.</span></p></div></div>barbaraminkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16735454768572896693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5248634732019307372.post-45012295804179710452019-07-28T07:39:00.001-04:002019-07-28T07:40:18.290-04:00Why this- why now?<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">

<span style="font-size: 11pt;">At a recent opening of my show in Rochester, one relatively sophisticated viewer pointed out that some of the paintings looked like they were by different people. The organic, textured, flowing, hot colored abstract landscape next to three muted, resin coated circles and dots bothered him. </span><span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; font-size: 11pt;"></span><br />

<span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; font-size: 11pt;">Not me, though. Having come to painting late, I insisted on spending a few years going through many stages of representational rendering- flowers, fish, fruit, figures- and that’s just the ‘f’s- to prove to myself that I could. When I decided I had captured clouds and sunrises and the sea, I got rid of the horizon line- and I was painting abstractly, which had been my goal all along.</span></div>

<span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; font-size: 11pt;">Rather than experiment in style pastiche or stages I think I paint in paragraphs. A new idea emerges, it gets done again, different iterations, then I revisit what I had thought was finished. When this essay is finished, I move on. Mark Rothko and Vassilly Kandinsky both started with </span><br />
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">small paintings that all looked like Chagall villages. Once they reached their abstract voices, and the collectors responded, their dealers took all the early work off the market. Rothko’s early paintings now line the walls of his son Christopher Rothko on the Upper West Side.</span></div>

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; font-size: 11pt;">But an even more important question might be why do we do in the times in which we live. I wrestle with this as a painter but also as a person who does not respond to didactic art. But art for art’s sake has its own power, both for the maker and for the viewer.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 13.1px;">
<span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; font-size: 11pt;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; font-size: 11pt;">The painting I’ve called Remains of the Day should indeed be taken as a warning, with the suggestion of a mushroom cloud masquerading as a tree hovering over a midwestern town. But it’s also a play on line, on the muted color of ink soaking into unprimed canvas. Cascadilla was named after the fact, because of what looks like a waterfall and an arched bridge and walls of shale- but I painted it as a play of shapes and texture. The suggestion of Tuscan hill towns among the imaginary landscapes is due to a few horizontal lines that turn inchoate color into landscapes.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: 11pt; text-align: center;">My most recent work, which I'll be expanding into a novella, is probably the best example of looking like it was done by a different person. But of course, the rigor of hard edged rendering is the same skill I used in doing watercolor flowers or oil still lives. The colors are my favorites throughout all my work, blues and reds and pinks, just covering bigger and more discrete areas.</span></div>

<span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; font-size: 11pt;">But why go from free and flowing abstracts to these? It's the anniversary of the moon walk, which is certainly at the tail end of the last midcentury, but I hadn't thought of that. I was looking at some old futuristic world's fair pictures, and saw that the Jetsons cartoon show was only on for a year, that could have been the inspiration. I have a book on Kandinsky from 20 years ago that I looked at AFTER I had done three of these paintings, and realized how similar they were. </span></div>

<span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none; font-size: 11pt;">But most of all, the process of doing these is one way to control chaos, to contain the political outrages that color my world view from the minute I wake up until I go to sleep. I can't change the broader picture by myself, but I CAN control the canvas in front of me, and emerge with an interplay of shapes and colors that make me feel calm, and that viewers respond to. </span></div>

One is under resin which really makes it pop, but the completely inked painting also makes a statement. Trying to push winter away, I guess.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I’ve been having a great time experimenting with resin coatings for my ink and acrylic work. I started with birch boards as a base, which is recommended, but I’ve had success with both board and tightly stretched canvas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What I love is the way it makes colors pop! It certainly adds to the production of a piece in terms of time and technique, but it’s worth it. I use ArtResin, which is odorless and easy to mix up, though you DO have to heed the directions and wear shoes and gloves (sigh). I use a heat gun rather than a gas torch to run over the surface to remove bubbles, and seems to work. I’ve also had bad experiences using blue painter’s tape on the sides, to keep small droplets from forming and hardening. Instead I go over the drips with gloved hands to get rid of them, then sand off the dried remainder with a circular sander.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I still alternate between work with resin and paintings on raw canvas- tension between warmth that draws you in and a cool barrier through which to view the piece.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I've made so many new friends through the gallery and paintings, I love seeing my work in new homes. Below are some "in situ" shots from the last couple years.<br />

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;">The first real snowfall of the year has buried the sidewalks and trees, a beautiful sight- from indoors, of course. My collection of work on display through the end of the month in downtown Ithaca's CAP Artspace is a reflection of what I feel about the season; black, white, everything in between, muted colors but stark forms, creating a mix of sharp outline and deep softness. My paintings range from large reflections of walks up Cascadilla gorge to a view at Stewart Park, to smaller works on paper, sometimes a wash of black or gray, highlighted with small pen drawings.</span><br style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;" /><br style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;">Growing up in Buffalo, winter was a part of life for us, not something to dread as unexpected, but a seasonal reality to embrace. Ithaca, just three hours away, has been my home for 40 years, and I continue to respond to each change of season through my work.</span><br />

(Quintus in Watkins Glen and Cornelia Street Cafe August September, Art Trail at the Mink Gallery October, CAP Artspace and Impulse Buy Popup with sister in law Ronna in December.)<br />

It's such a privilege to have one's work viewed and thoughtfully considered by someone you've never met. Jessica Beck is the Associate Curator of Art at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, and was the judge for the BSA 120th Catalogue Show at the Castellani Museum of Art in Lewiston. I wanted to share what she wrote about this piece, "Happiness", not only because it's so generous, but because it makes me think about what I do in new ways.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg64kBL_azwV6ElO29E5T9zCDOp34jpNLGCA3wUb7mbPmTeoMI4qMX0FP7S_DZVY8X-mk5njiocSIKyTR6YkCBFbCTJMT_J_93xy5XUO7NbJqBUUV57-DalyiimDv2FCb6pjIIyyryO5n4/s1600/IMG_3907.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg64kBL_azwV6ElO29E5T9zCDOp34jpNLGCA3wUb7mbPmTeoMI4qMX0FP7S_DZVY8X-mk5njiocSIKyTR6YkCBFbCTJMT_J_93xy5XUO7NbJqBUUV57-DalyiimDv2FCb6pjIIyyryO5n4/s200/IMG_3907.jpg" width="183" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6qkNPelxurfR3CKIwAvEK2v4JTm1T_XzMDYEGmleal1clM7V4f3F6ZGwIl5Hz_N6B6E5NUe41WLfx5tAyNZn4SFv7IZLnWnLrigun55DljHrr_eiClp9TRbaNOpa07T6ynqgD3aRJWnw/s1600/image.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6qkNPelxurfR3CKIwAvEK2v4JTm1T_XzMDYEGmleal1clM7V4f3F6ZGwIl5Hz_N6B6E5NUe41WLfx5tAyNZn4SFv7IZLnWnLrigun55DljHrr_eiClp9TRbaNOpa07T6ynqgD3aRJWnw/s200/image.jpeg" width="190" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
"In the process of installing the exhibition Michael Chow aka Zhou Yinghua: Voice for My Father at the Andy Warhol Museum, my thoughts have turned to abstraction with new direction. (Example above left.) Chow works with large-scale abstraction and engages mixed materials, including precious metals, house paint, and even trash. With densely layered surfaces and contrasting textures, Chow's paintings have an intense, almost violent energy. In this competition, the painting Happiness by Barbara Mink caught my attention. Her palette of muted pastels creates a sense of levity that I found fascinating and sophisticated. There was an overall sense of softness and warmth in her canvas, qualities which are not usually used to describe abstraction. The genre of abstract painting has a longstanding, mostly masculine, place within the history of art, and it was refreshing to see a feminine perspective on this tradition. Mink found a balance between color and material that leads to an overall sense of harmony in her work. "</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had never heard of Chow before, and am glad I've been "introduced." In looking at the two images above, and at the work of women who were working during the fifties and sixties heyday of abstract expressionism (Frankenthaler, Krasner) or contemporary colleagues (Melissa Zarem in Ithaca) I don't see palettes, energy or gestures that are terribly from male contemporaries. So it's interesting to think about the framework, both historical and current, within which we view things. </div>

So why not put some thoughts down?<br />
<br />
My father was 42 when he painted "Valhalla ", oils thinned with turpentine to create a watery feel, something I also gravitated towards when I was using oils, and also now with inks and acrylics. They say you never really lose your first drives as a painter, and I started with water colors, so...<br />
<br />
My father started drawing and painting as a young teen, and wanted to be a professional artist. But the familiar caution, "From this one makes a living?" steered him towards medical school. We grew up hearing that the quota on Jews at the University of Buffalo is what kept him from medical school- but as he was dying in hospice, he told me that his grades weren't actually good enough to get in, so he became a lab tech.<br />
<br />
I was 46 when I started painting, driven by an irresistible urge, out of the blue. I felt , not without reason, that I had a lot of catching up to do, and insisted on proving to myself that I could render accurately before I let myself explore abstraction, which is what I always wanted to do. I've followed my instincts, but those instincts led me on strangely similar paths as my father, truly subliminal. I was an exchange student in Switzerland when my father painted Valhalla and gave it- sold it?- to his first cousin, also named Irving. I had never seen this painting before today.<br />
<br />
Both my father and his cousin were named after my grandmother's father, Israel, Americanized to Irving. Irving Osofsky was the son of my grandmother's sister, Gittel. He had one leg, after his father Sam unwittingly ran him over in the driveway when Irving was a child, an event that was very hard to recover from, as you can imagine. Irving was a brilliant scientist at Bell Aerospace in California. I visited him and his family when I was 10. Irv had a motorcycle with a sidecar, which was unbelievably cool, and he and his wife Leatrice and their children took me to Knott's Berry Farm and Universal Studios.<br />
<br />
Irving's son Sam sent me a letter last month, saying he was cleaning out his parents' house last fall after his mother died, Irving having passed away years before. He told me he wanted to send back the painting so we could enjoy it- I wrote him that given the size it would probably cost too much to ship; but ship it they did.<br />
<br />
This lovely gesture means so much, and reminds me how important family is, and history, and doing something with your life that has meaning. I'm grateful to be able to share these thoughts with you.<br />

I received a big box today; inside was a painting my father had done in the seventies, sent to me by cousins I had not seen since we were children well before then. It's on top; called "Valhalla", I had never seen it before. But I am struck by our resemblance in style. The painting on the bottom is mine. I knew we shared a love of abstract landscape, but seeing his drippy oils and acrylics again is so wonderful. What a gift from family, who, though distant, feel so close through their generosity.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Looking forward to our two month long special event at State of the Art Gallery in ithaca. SOAG artists respond to a poem or poems from regional poets, invited by past Poet Laureate of Tompkins County, Tish PEARLMAN. I chose her piece "In the Distance " and a poem by another former Poet Laureate and good friend, Gail Warhaft, called "Walking in Treman Gorge". I'll be showing in January with half the gallery members, the other half will have February. In addition to our regular first Friday openings we'll be having poetry readings by those represented , January 17 and February 14m at 2 pm at the gallery. Should be a lovely collaborative couple of months!</div>

I'm having a wonderful time making my architectural lines go 3-d. Working with acrylic skins and a combination of ink and acrylics, I'm able to achieve interesting texture without the heaviness of impasto. Think I'll stay here for a while.barbaraminkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16735454768572896693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5248634732019307372.post-5167159189240614422015-01-16T09:14:00.001-05:002015-01-16T09:14:53.242-05:00Ink on paper<p>Old school, yes, but I've never done smaller scale abstract pieces before. <span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman';">Some of my best
childhood memories include “helping” my father paint huge abstracts in our
basement on Parkside in Buffalo, accompanying him to Niagara Falls to sketch,
or setting up for outdoor art festivals. I didn’t start painting myself until
much later, but those formative experiences made me feel that making things was
part of life- and that the process was as important as the end result.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">A member of
the Buffalo Society of Artists and Western New York Artists Group, my father
Irving Mink was also a research scientist at Roswell Park Memorial Institute
and educator who painted and exhibited locally, nationally and internationally
for 50 years. He won many awards, had one-man shows in Toronto, New York City,
Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo, and his works are represented in over 800
private collections.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">I remember
that for him, flexibility was the key. When he was doing Pollack-like pours and
drips on huge canvases on the floor, I accidentally knocked over a box of
birdseed onto the canvas- it was promptly incorporated into the paintings.
While sketching outdoors mist from Niagara Falls got his paper wet- the
resultant bleed just added to the watery feel.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">His trajectory
was an interesting one- from very large abstract landscapes, to isolated
figures in pencil, to pen and ink drawings and small acrylics, He used a
combination of expressive line and negative space to give an ambiguous
emotional tone to the work. They can be seen as either isolated figures or figures
in sharp focus. He once wrote: “<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic;">My
goals are simple; to create beauty, something that is good to look at. Old
people, lonely people, are often my subjects; I paint what I feel, influenced
only by vague memories, a fleeting emotional fancy. This is my piece of
history, my footprints in the sands of time.“</span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">My artistic
arc has been almost the reverse- I started with botanical drawing, large
watercolor flowers, then fruit, fish, figures and landscapes until I moved to
large-scale abstract oils and acrylics. The space in which I now work has a
more architectural feel, an interplay of color, line and texture. <span style="color: #222222;">Paintings which were vigorously chromatic and heavily layered
have evolved in the direction of the spare, the muted, and the geometric. </span>I
believe that scale has as much to do with the power of the image to enter the
imagination, as it does physical dimensions. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">I started
painting in 1999 and it has been part of my life through careers in politics,
university teaching, and founding an annual festival of science and art. As an
active member of the Ithaca Art Trail, State of the Art Gallery and the Buffalo
Society of Artists, I’ve had the good fortune to show and sell in and beyond New
York State.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">My father and
I have shown together three times - in 1999 at the Kenan Center in Lockport
where my outsized botanicals meshed with his pen and ink figurative drawings,
at the Jewish Center of Buffalo, and in 2005 at State of the Art Gallery in
Ithaca, with photography by my brother Symon and pottery masks by my
sister-in-law Ronna<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">I'm going to be showing his work with mine twice, as a way to honor his memory and abilities- and just to keep him more present a bit longer. In August I'll split the Mink Gallery into two, and hang a mixture of his oils, acrylics and pencil drawings with mine. Some of his prints will be available for sale, but most of the work will be part of our family's collection.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">Then this September
I’ll be bringing a selection of his Judaica from the 1980’s, inspired
by a trip he made to Israel with my mother in 1971, to the Echo Art Fair in Buffalo. </span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman';">I had
suggested to him that we should apply to the Echo Art Fair earlier this year together,
in part as a way to look forward, after a year of mourning my mother and his
own declining health.</span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman';"> </span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman';">He died two weeks

I've had success through <a href="http://www.zatista.com/search#keywords=mink">Zatista</a>, <a href="https://www.vangoart.co/">Vango</a> and my<a href="http://www.barbaramink.com/"> website</a>, much to my surprise. People are wonderfully adventurous- and the sites I'm on are honest and efficient. Hope it keeps up!barbaraminkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16735454768572896693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5248634732019307372.post-42493119998260773462013-11-02T08:16:00.000-04:002014-05-11T07:39:53.994-04:00Very glad to have gotten input from so many people yesterday on whether an artist should share older work or just new things. I took the overwhelming response to "retrospective"" to heart and added older work to the website at barbaramink.com. Feel better already!<br />
<br />
I think what prompted this introspection was my going back to fruit and flowers this year, which is where I started, but approaching it with the techniques I now use. Looser, translucent, not botanical illustration. Felt like a good time to look backwards as well as forwards.<br />
