Don’t miss this huge retrospective of Pollock-Krasner at The Met

I grew up with some favorite paintings at what was then the Albright Knox and is now the AKG/ one was an iconic Pollock, the other the only Krasner I thought I liked.

But this retrospective shows not only side by side paintings but their separate development- when they were on the same “page” there were obvious similarities:

But along the way Krasner dealt more with spiky shapes like in the first one I showed- here’s another:

 then so did Pollock:
I love this one especially because of the color scheme, the same as Matisse’s Piano Lesson, which I first saw 30 years ago and which inspired my interest in the Golden Ratio and in turn was an inspiration for the Light in Winter Festival:

Both Krasner and Pollock were influenced by Matisse, especially his paper cutouts, as have I in terms of chromatic energy, layered textures, and geometric or organic line work.

I generally run through art galleries, looking for techniques or forms I can use, rather than standing before and contemplating  a piece because it’s famous. This show is profoundly validating to me-  not being afraid to explore radically different approaches, huge and small scale , color palettes. Some dont work for me- but many, especially pieces by Krasner, are going to bring me back a few more times.
